Sustainable Tourism

SUSTAINABLE TOURISM AND VISITS OF VILLAGE CHIEFS TO OTHER ECOVILLAGES: discovery of great experiences.

Diary from Keur Dhieyte, by Domenico Maffeo (Do Community – Venice) and Abdoulaye Ndoye, Village Chief – Jan. 2015.

Program of our sustainable tourism: Centre and outskirts of Dakar, Gorée island, ferry to Zinguinchor, Abene and Kafuntine, crossing of Gambia, Sokone and Keur Bakar, Ndem and Dioll Kad, Thies (Agrecol Afrique), Dakar.

With the Chief, two women, two young men, and four representatives of Keur Bakar village, we visited and explored innovative methods in the villages of Ndem and Dioll Kad,

This was our third time in Ndem with our groups of sustainable tours. Here, in the last thirty years, several innovative activities have been carried out in association with nearby villages under the lead of Serigne Babacar. The village now stands as an example of solid indigenous development respectful of the natural environment.

In the last few years Ndem ONG has been improving their methods to incorporate ecological agronomy in line with sustainable development, biological horticulture, small breedings, apiculture, transformation and trade of products, sustainable consumption awareness, drip irrigation systems, production and use of Bioterra (small clay and peanut skins balls for burning) and many other initiatives (web-site www.ndem.info). This has been a source of useful information for Keur Bakar Dieyete ecovillage.

Both Dioll Kad and Ndem have had experience in hosting sustainable tourists. A young guide from the Viaggi & Miraggi cooperative has taken the representatives of Keur Bakar to Dioll where they have been taught not only the basics of the tourist industry (cuisine, baths and showers, bedrooms) but also the cultivation of flower and herbal medicine.
